Oh no! I know they didn’t just say that! Yes we said it! And here is why. Every year radio stations, magazines, and websites light up with content honoring the late great rapper Biggie Smalls. Events take place, interviews are given, even both crews of the late Biggie and Tupac have called a truce this year and even put out a music video. Yet when we asked some of our listeners about Biggie’s death the responses weren’t what we expected. So before you get upset and start calling for the mob check out the results of our research and read what the top 5 responses were. You may or may not be shocked.

REASON #5: WWBW (What Would Biggie Want)

If you were shot and mercilessly killed while riding in the back of an SUV would you want people to remember that day? Or would you want people to remember the day you rocked Summer Jam or when your album went platinum? Biggie’s first album ‘Ready To Die’ let people know that the Brooklyn MC did not fear death. His second album represented the fact that Biggie was enjoying life. Many people we asked believed that Biggie would dissapprove of all the attention on this sad day.

REASON #4: THE LEGACY DISPUTE

This is where it gets ugly. Whitney Houston recently passed and the world mourned together. Whitney had hit after hit after hit. Some people dispute that Biggie Smalls didn’t have enough records out or enough number 1 records to garner so much attention. Now we would like to mention that most of these people are on the West Coast.

REASON #3: THE TUPAC VS BIGGIE DISPUTE

It gets even uglier. Once great friends turned bitter enemies, the feud that started a hip hop war would ultimately claim the lives of both artists. Till this day the West Coast and East Coast debate on who was the better MC. Although the majority of the hip hop world doesn’t care anymore, a simple check on the internet will reveal that die hard Tupac fans still refuse to show love for Biggie. Biggie fanatics do the same, often blaming one of the two for the death of the other. At the end of the day there is no winner and we have lost two of raps greatest.

REASON #2: AS TIME PASSES ON SO DOES THE HYPE

Faithful Biggie fans do not hesitate to pass on the knowledge and history of The Notorious Big onto the young and those who are not hip. The media also does not let a year go by where they do not pay homage to Biggie. His music still gets regular rotation and as long as Bad Boy records is still in Business, no one will not know who Biggie is. On the other hand if you are 25 or younger, a demographic that buys into hip hop the most, then you were at the most 10 when Biggie passed. You may not even have been born when he was murdered. Therefore they don’t care as much. Today’s youth may know who Biggie is but are not as connected to him emotionally as the older folk would be. Lil Wayne is their Biggie and he is still alive.

REASON #1: WHY ARE WE CELEBRATING HIS DEATH ANYWAY?!

This is the biggest reason why some people don’t care about Biggie’s death. They are too busy celebrating his life! For some odd reason the media makes it a big deal to recognize the death of celebrities instead of celebrating their birth or great achievements. If we are going to celebrate Biggie or Tupac then we should make holidays for them and celebrate everything they accomplished and what they meant to us. Michael Jackson’s family recently refused to participate in a huge celebrity event that was dedicated to MJ on the anniversary of his death. They stated that they would be more than happy to participate in the celebration if it was intended to celebrate his life but they could not endorse something that recognized such a tragic moment in time. The majority of responses we got to our survey supported the same notion, “why would I celebrate his death”…agreed.

So at the end of the day don’t go ringing the alarm, instead tell us what you think. We are all deeply saddened at the loss of such a talented young man. Both Biggie and Tupac had much more impact beyond just rapping. As the years go buy what will become of their legacy? What can we do to make it more than just a playlist of songs or a write up in a magazine. Let’s focus on that instead of their deaths.
