We tell little kids that bullies go away eventually. We say that when you’re all grown up, that the words of others don’t hurt. But that’s a lie. And we should stop saying it. Because bullies stick around and words hurt, period.

In case you missed it, Jason Collins a pro NBA free agent, decided to announce that he was gay this week. Check out the video from ABC below.

While, it’s probably safe to say no one thought that Jason Collins was going to receive nothing but positivity after making his big announcement a few days ago, we’re not sure anyone thought it would come to such hatred and vitriol via the internets. The kind of venom he has received on Twitter in the last 24 hours is just sad.

Tweeps have been raining hate down upon his mentions with tweets like;

“Yous a dead f****t talkn on tv Boy.”

“Listening to Jason Collins describe his gayness as ‘beautiful’ makes me wanna puke. And kill him.”

“Jason collins comes out the closet! Kill that biiitttchhhh!!!”

“First jason collins say he gay.. Now he on espn w lipgloss on  kill him now !!!”

“Jason Collins should get the death penalty lol how u a 7 foot gay dude lol the west is crazy smh”

Wishing death upon others is bad enough but wishing it upon those that you don’t even know, that’s cowardly. It’s especially cowardly if you do it behind the safety of a keyboard and avitar. It’s wrong and we surely hope that Jason Collins has been able to focus more on the praise he’s had lavished upon him in the last few days than he has the hate. This man has done nothing wrong to anyone else, he’s just being honest about himself.

Now, if you want to talk about his jump shot from the perimeter, this we’re willing to have a conversation on. Because in the end, that is all that matters. We kid Jason, well sort of!
