Charlie Perkins, 70, a homeless man in Atlanta, GA, froze to death as temperatures in the city plummeted to 5 degrees, reports AJC.com.

[Perkins] was found Tuesday morning outside a business in the 900 block of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, Atlanta police said.

An autopsy determined Perkins died from hypothermia, an investigator with the M.E.’s office said.

Businesses and schools around Atlanta have been forced to close due to the weather that has frozen the nation.

Temperatures around the country have shattered records with the Midwest facing sub-zero temperatures and the East and South US facing rare single digits weather.

Weather in Lexington, Kentucky was so frigid, with wind-chill readings of 20 below zero, that Robert Vick, 42, an escaped inmate from Blackburn Correctional Complex, turned himself in as the weather reached arctic levels.
