Nike Blames Early Red October Release On Kanye West Fans

From the looks of things, Kanye West’s fans have as much power as the rapper they love. At least that’s how Nike may have took it when it did a Beyoncé and dropped West’s Red October Yeezy sneakers without warning over the weekend.

As for why the shoe giant unleashed the highly anticipated footwear early, a Nike spokesman revealed the motivator was consumer demand.

“Nike was committed to releasing the Red color way. And it was clear the consumer was asking for it,” the rep explained to the Wall Street Journal via an e-mail that also confirmed that the Red October is the last Kanye West shoe to be released under the Nike umbrella. “Nike communicated directly to nearly 2.6 million Twitter followers when we made it available for purchase…. This is the final shoe in the Yeezy collection.”

Nike’s reaction comes days after a successful surprise outing for the Red Octobers. According to reports, the footwear, priced at $245 quickly sold out after Nike tweeted a purchase link to their online store. Eleven minutes later, the Red Octobers were all sold. Whether or not Nike releases any more Red Octobers online or at retail stores in the future remains to be seen.

West’s Air Yeezy collection arrived on the scene in 2009 with the original Air Yeezy. In 2012, Nike released two colorways of the Air Yeezy II, which earned as much as $90,000 on eBay due to the limited quantity of shoes available.
