nasir-fleming-was-crowned-prom-queen-at-danbury-high-school

WATER COOLER TALK: Meet Nasir Fleming, an openly gay 17 year old student from Danbury High School that was nominated for his high school’s prom and queen.

Nasir had to choose what title he wanted to run for and he chose to run for Queen. Why? Nasir has been openly gay sine the 6th grade and has been bullied and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to make a statement against gender and sexuality discrimination.

Nasir stated, “Even though I identify as male, winning this title is a statement against transphobia. As gay people, more or less, are becoming accepted in society, transgendered people are still discriminated against severely. If I can win a title that is outside of my gender, there is no reason why a trans-person should have any problems winning titles in his/her gender (Prom Queen, Miss America, etc). Stop the hate, start the love.”

Nasir won the title of Prom Queen with overwhelming support, but of course there are many critics. In your opinion, do you think Nasir should have been allowed to run for Prom Queen?
