Johnny Kemp

The Urban Daily has confirmed that Johnny Kemp, singer best known for his 1988 hit “Just Got Paid,” passed away Thursday, April 16. He was 55. At this time, the cause of death is unknown.

It has been reported by numerous outlets that Kemp died on The Tom Joyner’s Fantastic Voyage Cruise 2015. REACH Media, the company founded by Tom Joyner and through which his radio show is nationally syndicated, has denied these reports. According to representatives from the company, Kemp was slated to perform with R&B legend Teddy Riley, but never boarded the boat.

A native of the Bahamas, Kemp began his music career singing in nightclubs at 13 years old. He released his self-titled debut album in 1986.

He is survived by his wife Deirdre, two sons, his family and friends.
