A Saturday story by TMZ reports a California judge has shut down a sound engineer’s lawsuit against Jay Z based on claims he was the co-author of 45 Jay Z songs, including “Big Pimpin,” “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me),” and unpublished outtakes from Vol 3… The Life and Times of S. Carter. Chauncey Mahon’s claims of being denied proper compensation and credit on the songs were originally reported in September 2014, and Jay Z’s legal team quickly filed a motion to dismiss the suit. TMZ reports the following:

“Chauncey Mahan, a sound engineer on the albums, claimed ownership and stashed boxes of tracks in a San Fernando Valley storage facility. Cops eventually seized the masters, but Mahan didn’t back down. He sued Jay and Roc Nation in July, trying to get a piece of the action.”

Jay Z’s camp initially contested the suit on grounds it didn’t pass the two-part test for joint authorship and that Mahan had the better part of 14 years to rectify the matter.

The liner notes of The Dynasty Roc La Familia (2000- ) credit Mahan on four songs, including mixing work on “Big Pimpin’.” Mahan is credited in the liner notes of Vol 3… The Life and Times of S. Carter on six songs, including the single, “Change The Game.”
