Baltimore Protests

One Baltimore resident directly asked a news reporter one of the very questions that has been on Black America’s mind since Saturday.

Practically all we see coming out of Baltimore are images of the city burning because that’s what’s grabbed the attention of mainstream media. Every evening, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News and more continue to report on the more extreme demonstrations, but there isn’t much attention given to peaceful protests and people volunteering in the city’s recovery.

When MSNBC reporter Thomas Roberts went to the middle of the demonstration, he asked Danielle Williams whether she believes the violence is a good representation of Baltimore residents.

He was even prepared to question whether rioting helps the cause of those striving for justice for Freddie Gray and against continued police brutality in the city and beyond. What he may not have been prepared for is to be put on the spot for inequitable reporting on the #BaltimoreUprising movement.

Williams replied that the violence is not a good representation of her neighbors, but she threw the reporter for a loop with a pertinent query of her own.

“My question to you is, when we were out here protesting all last week for six days straight peacefully, there were no news cameras, there were no helicopters, there was no riot gear, and nobody heard us,” Williams said. “So now that we’ve burned down buildings and set businesses on fire and looted buildings, now all of the sudden everybody wants to hear us.”

She continued, “Why does it take a catastrophe like this in order for America to hear our cry? I mean, enough is enough. We’ve had too many lives lost at the hands of police officers.”

Shut him up! Roberts had no answer for her question…at all. Instead of getting into a dialogue about the skewed coverage in Baltimore, he just plugged along with another question for her.

When asked how she feels Baltimore PD handled Gray’s arrests, she stated, “I think they could have done a much better job of handling it. I think they’ve had plenty of cities around America [that] have served as examples of what not to do.”
