Monday marked a historic day for the transgender community when Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair’s June issue.

And as soon as photographs of Caitlyn, dressed in draping designer gowns and jewels, hit the internet, Twitter users started sounding off. While reactions to Jenner’s identity have been mixed, support for Caitlyn has overwhelmingly taken over the internet, reinvigorating the conversation surrounding the future of transgender rights.

President Obama took to Twitter to express his support for Caitlyn, posting photos from her Vanity Fair spread with the message “It takes courage to share your story.”

Former supermodel and businesswoman Tyra Banks also sent her love to Caitlyn in a simple tweet that acknowledged the public figure’s arrival.

Other stars, including Kerry Washington, transgender activist Janet Mock, and Shonda Rhimes also offered kind words to Caitlyn via social media.

But the show of support didn’t stop many from voicing their opinions about Caitlyn’s debut, including many who insisted on calling Caitlyn by her former name. No matter your personal preference, the truth remains that transgender women are women and transgender men are men, whether they are Black, White, Asian, etc.

And what they choose to be identified as is valid. It matters.
