An NYPD officer was shot and killed yesterday in Harlem, New York as he was trying to track down a suspected robber. Thirty-three-year-old Randolph Holder and his partner, who both were dressed in plainclothes, were responding to the claim of a stolen bike. They witnessed the suspect riding the bike on an overpass. According to reports, the officers were trying to track down more than one person, and a hail of gunfire ensued between the two groups. Holder was shot in the head and rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he died. “We are fighting to understand the loss of a man who did so much, cared so much, dedicated so much to protecting others,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio during a press conference. “An immigrant who wanted to give back to his city and his country. … In the words of Abraham Lincoln, a man who gave the last full measure of his devotion on behalf of a city he loved.” Holder was a Guyanese immigrant who joined the police force five years ago and patrolled public housing projects in East Harlem. “Finding Your Roots” to Return to PBS Next Year

The controversy circling actor Ben Affleck’s appearance on Finding Your Roots will not stop the show from moving forward. After the show’s third season was postponed, it will now return to PBS next year. Earlier this year, while delving into his ancestry, Affleck discovered that one of his family members was a slave owner. He asked the producers to leave the information out of the show. Show host Henry Louis Gates and Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton exchanged emails about how to handle the situation, which were later made public. PBS claims that Gates succumbed to the pressure put out by Affleck and postponed the series. The new season, which is slated to air on January 5, will feature Shonda Rhimes, Julianne Moore, and Neil Patrick Harris. Read more.
