A man who worked for a local government in Spain was found to have not been doing his job for six years. Patrick Jones (@Patrick_E_Jones) explains.

In most workplace scenarios, not showing up for the job for an unexcused for days on end would be cause for a swift termination. But in the case of one man, he went six years with skipping work before anyone even took notice, reports BBC.

Joaquín García, 69, worked as a building supervisor in Spain and didn’t show up for his civil servant job for at least six years while collecting a $41,500 salary. Garcia’s no-show plan was foiled after he received an award for 20 years of service before his coworkers realized that he hasn’t been at the office for quite some time.

BBC reports:

Joaquin Garcia, 69, was fined €27,000 (£21,000; $30,000) after the award brought his long absence to light.

Mr Garcia, whose job was to supervise the building of a waste water treatment plant, has since retired.

He denies the allegations and his lawyer says he has gone into hiding after suffering a media “lynching”.

Mr Garcia said he had been a victim of political bullying in the job and moved to a post where there was no work to do.

He was paid €37,000 a year before tax by a water company run by local authorities in the south-western city of Cadiz. A court found in the authority’s favour and ordered him to pay the fine, which is equivalent to one year’s salary after tax and was the most that the company could legally reclaim.

The absence was discovered by Cadiz’s deputy mayor after the 20-year plaque for years of service was delivered to  Garcia’s office. Despite Garcia’s office being across from the manager of the water company and not seeing the man for years, there was some confusion on who actually supervised him.

Garcia has requested in a letter to the mayor to allow him to bypass repaying the fine and to renew the judgement.
