Louisiana Looks to Change the Juvenile Justice System with New Legislation

State senators in Louisiana are looking to make major alterations when it comes to the juvenile justice system. On Tuesday, state leaders voted 36-1 for a bill that would give parole hearings to individuals who committed crimes as juveniles and were sentenced to life in prison. In order to qualify for the parole hearing, the person incarcerated must serve 35 years of their sentence, participate in a pre-release program, obtain their GED, and undergo job skills training. They shouldn’t have any disciplinary infractions on their record and will need to attend substance abuse counseling if need be. Louisiana is also looking to raise the age for charging minors as adults. Louisiana senators voted 33-4 for that bill. “Raising the age of juvenile jurisdiction, as this legislation proposed, makes sense,” Gov. Jon Bel Edwards said in a statement. “In Louisiana, adult usually means 18. Seventeen-year-olds can’t vote, serve on juries, join the military, or buy a lottery ticket. There’s only one exception: Kids are automatically charged, jailed and imprisoned as adults the day they turn 17, regardless of their offense.” Read more.
