Hip Hop can often get monotonous once a certain style and sound is deemed “the new”. Once something becomes catchy it seems that everybody starts doing it. Just recently we’ve had the dance craze, from the flex to the dougie, to the walk-it-out and the cat daddy. Don’t forget the Auto tune revolution. We still can’t shake that trend. Not the fact that T-Pain is the only one who consistently did it right.
Anyway it always refreshing to see or hear a new sound, not a sound that once you hear it you know that it’s going to be copied. No, a sound that is unique enough to make you stop and listen.
If you are a music head then you experience days like these, when you’ve heard of a group or a sound and one day your curiosity gets the best of you and you find yourself emerged into this sound, band, artists or whatever. I love “exploring” new sounds and appreciate when artists break the mold and bring something new to the game.

So what is the future sound of hip hop? You can go the easy route and take a look at XXL’s freshman of the year issue. Or you can hit the net, music blogs, music magazines, and of course hit the streets to find that fresh out the box music. And according to new group “Odd Future” the music coming out is not so fresh and clean.
According to Wikipedia, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, often abbreviated OFWGKTA or Odd Future, are a hip hop collective from Los Angeles, California. Led by rapper/producer Tyler the Creator, the group also includes rappers Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis and Mike G, singer Frank Ocean and producers Left Brain, Syd and The Super 3. As of February 2011, their ages range from 17 to 23 years old. There are two groups inside the collective: MellowHype and EarlWolf. MellowHype consists of rapper Hodgy Beats and producer Left Brain, and EarlWolf consists of Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt.
Odd Future has released four mixtapes and eight solo albums, all available for free on their website. They have garnered a cult following, and have been getting press from blogs as well as magazines. Though often labeled as horrorcore, the group have universally dismissed it on Twitter, and in interviews. The group has received national attention recently after performing on MTV’s Woody Awards and on the Jimmy Fallon show. Controversy has followed the group after Tyler the Creator’s new video for the song “Yonkers” sent parents and religious leaders into a frenzy.

So instead of just talking about the group I wanted to give you the experience I had learning about the group and their unique style. Should we be worried about the “odd” future of hip hop or is this another chapter in the colorful world of rap music? (remember when Wu-Tang came out, or how about ONYX?…Don’t be surprised by a little “odd”ness)
