Rajaan Bennett, one of the top-ranked high school running backs in the country who recently signed a letter of intent with Vanderbilt, is dead after being shot in an apparent murder-suicide. Police responded to a 2:30am call Thursday from Bennett’s home in Powder Springs, Georgia. The 18-year-old was found shot and killed inside his home, as was 39-year-old Clifton O’Neal Steger, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Also in the home were Bennett’s mother,

Narjaketha Bennett, and her brother, Taiwan Hunter, who had also been shot. He underwent surgery and was listed in serious condition later Thursday. Steger, meanwhile, was identified as Bennett’s mother’s ex-boyfriend but no motive has been given.

Bennett was rated as the 25th-best high school football player in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Fab 50 and was a three-star prospect according to ESPN Recruiting. He rushed for 1,857 yards and 28 touchdowns during his senior season at McEachern High School. These are the words Bennett’s high school coach Kyle Hockman used when he signed with Vandy:

“I’m sure you want to talk about Rajaan on the football field, but I promise he’s a better person than he is a player. He has a great head on his shoulders, a guy that has been the man in his household for quite a while, yet still worked to maintain a solid GPA in class and become such a great player. Rajaan is both humble and hardworking. He’s a guy that is very respected by his teammates and the McEachern community. I think the world of this young man.”

High school principal Regina Montgomery said that counselors are on hand at the school. “We don’t know what we’re going to do tomorrow, we’re just trying to get through today together … We have a population of 2,200 kids and when you’re Rajaan Bennett, you touch the lives of all 2,200.”
