Mother’s Day should be known for celebrating the women in your life who helped to shape and mold you. It should never be identified with shooting and hostage crises. But that’s exactly what happened yesterday in Trenton, New Jersey when a hostage situation turned for the worse.

The police were looking for a 44-year-old woman, Carmelita Stevens, who had been missing for weeks and they were responding to a missing persons report, according to BuzzFeed. Her children were also missing.

After no response at her house, the police broke in.

They were immediately confronted by the stench of rotting flesh and saw maggots throughout the home.

Upstairs they found a man named Gerald “Skip” Murphy, 38, who said he was “armed with explosives” and was “holding the three children”. The police also found Stevens’ 19-year-old son in the basement “being held captive”. They negotiated with Murphy to release the children, but by 3:45 a.m. the next day, they stormed the house.

Murphy began threatening the children. A single shot was fired. He was hit, later dying of his injuries at the hospital.

The three children who were rescued are being treated and evaluated. Police say Murphy had abused them while they were held captive.

According to NewsOne:

Murphy had a long criminal history including convictions for aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy. He had previously been arrested for robbery and weapons offenses and child endangerment. He also had an arrest warrant in Pennsylvania for failing to register as a sex offender.
