COLUMBUS, Ohio – The government wants a judge to take a former Ohio school resource officer’s cooperation into consideration when sentencing him for coercing sexual behavior from minors.

Federal prosecutors made the request in a court filing while acknowledging that defendant Todd Smith threatened one of his victims and tried to hide the cellphone he used to exchange graphic text messages with two girls.

Smith is scheduled for sentencing Friday after pleading guilty earlier this year to one count of using a cellphone to entice two underage minors to engage in sexual activity.

The government is recommending a sentence as low as 10 years.

Smith’s attorney says Smith is a one-time offender whose long history as a law-abiding police officer also should be considered.
