Mother outraged at elementary school ‘fight club’

A mother says a fight lesson was recorded on a phone video in the restroom of Dixon Elementary Learning Academy.

“Ten or more students in this restroom during school time, when they should be in the classroom learning,” she said. “Instead of in the bathroom having a fight club meeting or whatever you call it.”

The student’s mother, who does not want to be identified, was so upset by the laughter and taunting of her son as he is encouraged in the video to hit back.

Images on the video were blurred by FOX 2 to protect the children’s identities.

“His fight was two minutes and 20 seconds long,” she said. “Nobody ever came in, nobody checked.”

In light of the incident, she said she is forced to send him to another school.

“He says he doesn’t want to go back because he is afraid of the other kids, finding out that it was him,” she said.

The concerned mom says says her son and all children should feel safe at school and she wants school officials to do more to ensure their safety.

“They need to have more security or people back in classroom to help teachers,” she said.

In a statement to Fox 2, officials with Detroit Public Schools say:

“Immediately upon learning of an alleged incident at Dixon, the principal talked to students who may have been involved and is currently pursuing disciplinary action against any students who violated either the Code of Conduct and/or the Anti-Bullying Policy.

“The principal also immediately engaged all students in assemblies to reiterate policies and procedures and will continue to do so.”

After school officials learned of the video Wednesday, the mother says she was told to pick her son up from school and for him not to return pending an investigation.

University of Michigan fraternity members accused of vandalizing ski resorts

Crews are still cleaning up at the Treetops Resort in Gaylord after they say a group of fraternity members from the University of Michigan partied too hard and left a big mess behind.

Police say they had to escort the members of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity out after they wreaked havoc in the hotel rooms and hallways.

“Food, beer, alcohol all over the floor, on the walls; carpet damaged; a lot of ceiling tiles broken down; some furniture damage,” says Barry Owens, a general manager at Treetops Resort.

Owens says he estimates the amount of damage to be in the range of $50,000.

Boyne Highlands says it also saw damage from two more University of Michigan fraternities in up to 12 separate, private condos throughout the resorts.

“We’re the stewards of the property and it’s disturbing to us and we need to protect their investments. We are following up with U of M and they promised us swift action. We assessed a significant fee when they checked out not knowing what’s in repair but we wanted to protect our owners and ourselves,” said Mike Chumbler, General Manager of Boyne Highlands.

9&10News in Cadillac reached out to the university and received the following statement:

“We are very disappointed in the behavior of some of our students during a weekend visit to two northern Michigan ski resorts. I want to assure you that the organizations and the individuals involved will be held accountable for their actions. U-M staff members in the Office of Greek Life have begun meeting with the presidents of the fraternities and sororities involved. We expect full payment for all damages. The local Greek chapters are in the process of notifying their national organizations, which could bring their own sanctions. We are confident the national organizations will take this seriously and will work through this situation in collaboration with the university.

Additionally, these incidents will be addressed through the Greek Life student judiciary process on our campus.”

Men sentenced to life for murder, torture of Westland teens

Two Westland teenagers were murdered execution-style in a vacant Detroit field two and half years ago.

Wednesday was their opportunity to address the men who killed their sons but what one of the defendants had to say to them left everyone shaking their heads.

Fredrick Young and Felando Hunter – were sentenced on this day to life in prison without parole for robbing, torturing, murdering the two teens who had been in Detroit trying to buy drugs.

Jourdan Bobbish and his friend Jacob Kudla – the Westland teens went missing in July of 2012. Their lifeless bodies were discovered days later – in a field on Detroit’s east side.

At the sentencing, the victims’ family members gave their victim impact statements.

“Everything just aches and it’s just a totally senseless crime,” said Mike Bobbish, Jourdan’s father. “And how you could march someone out in the middle of a field and execute them – we’re not a third world country. Sometimes I wish it did happen in a third world country because it would be a lot different outcome of this whole thing.”

Virgie Kudla, Jacob’s mother then spoke.

“Not only did the defendant take away my son’s future,” she said. “He took away my future – my future as a mother – my future as a grandmother.”

“I have sorrow in my heart, soul and every fiber of my being today and I will carry that with me for the rest of my life here on earth,” said Carrie Bobbish, Jourdan’s mother.

When Young had his chance to apologize to the families – he did nothing of the sort..

“I’d like to say sorry to the families of Aiyanna Jones, Michael Brown, Eric Garner,” Young said. “And I want to apologize to them for not being able to get justice for their loved ones who was murdered in cold blood – and in respect for the peaceful protest, I want to say hands up don’t shoot. Black lives matter – that’s it your honor.”

People in the courtroom reacted in disbelief. But still – the message from the families of Jacob Kudla and Jourdan Bobbish was one of forgiveness.
