Oprah Winfrey (L) and director Ava DuVernay attend the 15th Annual AFI Awards Luncheon at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills on January 9, 2015 in Beverly Hills, California.

Watch out Tyler Perry, there’s a new kid in OWN-town.

It was announced today that Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay, the dynamic duo who collaborated on the Oscar-nominated biopic, Selma, are producing a scripted drama series on Winfrey’s OWN network.

And—for the first time ever—Winfrey will have a recurring role on the series, Queen Sugar, the story of a woman living in Los Angeles who moves with her daughter to her father’s 800-acre sugar cane farm in Louisiana after his death. DuVernay will write and direct, and both DuVernay and Winfrey will executive produce.

This is not DuVernay’s first foray into television – she directed an episode of Shonda Rhimes‘ primetime hit Scandal in November 2013.

“I loved this book and immediately saw it as a series for OWN,” said Winfrey in a statement released by Shadow And Act. “The story’s themes of reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show.”

“From the moment I was introduced to the book [written by Natalie Baszile], I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history,” said DuVernay in a statement.  “To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I’m excited about what’s in store.”
