Thomas Johnson, once a rising football star for Texas A&M, reportedly stabbed a jogger to death at random, leaving police with more questions than answers.

The 21-year-old was going through a rough patch in his life after losing his housing privileges when he allegedly struck 53-year-old David Stevens at a Dallas park with a “large-edged” knife on Monday. A cyclist passing the trail told reporters he witnessed the moment Johnson hacked at Stevens in the head, killing him.

Yahoo! Sports reports:

“It appears Mr. Johnson picked this victim at random. Absolutely random,” Deputy Chief Rob Sherwin said. “He just attacked him. … It’s just very unusual. It’s quite shocking.”

Johnson stayed at the scene of the crime and admitted to the murder. He was taken to the Dallas County Jail, where he was charged with murder and two counts of probation violation.

The former wide receiver signed with the Aggies in 2012. After a smooth record of 30 catches for 339 yards, he went missing in November and never returned to the field. Texas A&M released a statement about the incident and confirmed the player’s separation from the team.

“This is an awful tragedy for all involved. Johnson has not had any involvement with the football program over the past three years,” the school said.

His probation charge stems from a prior burglarizing arrest. Johnson broke into his aunt’s home and stole her vehicle and an undisclosed amount of money. He also failed to complete his community service and tested positive for marijuana. His mother previously told the San Antonio Express News her son was very private, but was working on making a comeback in football.

Johnson remains behind bars as the investigation continues.
