After questions arose about the death of a Black teen from Normandy, Mo., an autopsy revealed the 18-year-old died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face.

The St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office performed Amonderez Green’s autopsy Friday, Reuters reports. Green’s family called police after the reportedly suicidal teen began walking through the Ferguson area with a gun. Normandy is just south of the town where Michael Brown was shot and killed last year.

When police arrived, a chase ensued and officers used a Taser to disarm Green. When the Taser didn’t work, the teen allegedly fired a .38 caliber revolver at the police before they returned gunshots. After losing sight of Green during the chase, a gunshot was heard and the young man was found lying in the street.

Normandy Police claimed their bullets never hit Green. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 4:29 a.m. on Thursday.

The autopsy showed a bullet from a .38 caliber entered Green’s chin, causing his death. The teen had a gun of the same description on him the day he died. It belonged to a friend of the family.

The family released a statement to The Huffington Post before the autopsy findings were announced. They told reporters it would be hard for them to believe anything from the authorities because, among other things, Green’s mother, Lakea Green, wasn’t allowed to be with her son while his body was transported.

The Huffington Post reports:

The Green Family thanks everyone for their kind words, thoughts and prayers in this very tough and disturbing time. Amonderez was sweet, hardworking and loved his life. We will not cease until justice is brought forth and the complete truth is sought. We are not satisfied with the police investigation at this point, but we hold in our hearts that the truth about his death will come to light. We, the immediate family of Amonderez Green, ask that in this time your thoughts and prayers are with Lakea, his mother, and his siblings. We will release further statements when more details are revealed. Thank you.

Green’s father, Jermell Simpson, also disputed the autopsy.

However, Green’s cousin Donneka Sloan said other family members are just looking for answers — including why Ferguson police were at the scene in Normandy.

“[The Ferguson Police Department] is a department known for a lot of things right now, and that causes a lot of speculation,” she said.
