In our rush to get to the airport, we sometimes forget things in our bags that need to be discarded of. For most of us, it’s things like bottles of water, hair products beyond the approved size or even sharp combs that can be confused as weapons.
But then there’s individuals like Zonnique Pullins, rapper T.I.’s step daughter.
On June 16 the 20-year-old was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta for carrying a .380 Ruger semi-automatic pistol in her purse. For the first time since the incident, the former OMG Girlz singer is talking about what lead to the incident.
“I know that’s really irresponsible on my part, but it was really just an honest mistake,” Pullins told PEOPLE. “I was at home, rushing to get to the airport, and I was throwing everything in my purse. The gun is really, really small. It looks like a toy gun. It was just at the bottom of my purse. When I went through security check, I was like ‘Oh I forgot it was in there.’”
Adding, “I thought maybe I would be able to go back to the car and put it in there or they’d be able to throw it away, but it was worse than I thought. She [security] called some police over and that’s when I thought, ‘Okay, it’s about to be serious.’ That’s when I called my mom and said, ‘I might have to go to jail tonight. Please help me.’”
She went on to note that the gun was given to her by her mother Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, as a form of protection, since she often travels without security. “I always feel like I have to keep myself safe,” she said. “Then, with all the things going on, especially with Christina Grimmie, stuff like that.”
Listen. We get it.
It was a small gun, she meant no harm, and being a celebrity does draw a certain amount of unwanted, and often dangerous, attention.
But girl, next time, look thoroughly through your purses before you walk out the house.
