Three days after FBI investigators interviewed her in a probe that threatened to cloud a historic win as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Bureau Director James Comey announced no charges against Hillary Clinton in the email scandal that has trailed her through campaign season, the New York Times reports.

The Bureau found no evidence to warrant a criminal charge, Comey said, adding that “no reasonable prosecutor” could bring charges against the presidential hopeful. The probe did not find that Clinton intentionally “sent or received classified information,” the Times writes.

“Our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case,” he said at a news conference.

Comey did, however, deem Clinton’s use of a private email server while she served as Secretary of State “extremely careless.”

Via the Times:

During the investigation, Mr. Comey said, the F.B.I. recovered additional work-related emails that Mrs. Clinton’s lawyers had not turned over to the State Department, including some that contained classified information. But he said there was no evidence that she or her lawyers had intentionally deleted or withheld them.

Still, Mr. Comey delivered what amounted to an extraordinary public tongue-lashing. “There is evidence to support a conclusion,” he said, that Mrs. Clinton “should have known that an unclassified system was no place for that conversation.”

The Justice Department is likely to agree with the recommendation.
