Issa Rae, creator of the popular Awkward Black Girl series, hit a major milestone on Sunday with the debut of her new project Insecure. The first episode of the series, which aired on HBO, garnered upwards of 1 million viewers. The eight-episode comedy series chronicles two Black women, played by Rae and Yvonne Orji, as they deal with experiences surrounding their professional and personal lives. “I wanted to have two dark-skinned women as leads who were still desirable and still were to a degree—it’s called Insecure—but they still have a sense of confidence in who they are. We don’t get to see that. For me, that was an important choice,” said Rae. “I just want to force people to relate to black people. That’s kind of what I want the legacy to be. For people to look back and be like, “Oh my gosh these human black characters, I saw myself in them and I didn’t know that I could.” The series, co-created by Rae and comedian Larry Wilmore, falls under her 2-year production deal with HBO. Insecure airs Sundays at 10:30 p.m. on HBO. Read more.

Chicago Teacher’s Union Reaches Deal with City Officials

Classes will resume for students in Chicago on Tuesday following protests by educators who were concerned about their contracts and compensation. On Monday, the Chicago Teacher’s Union came to a provisionary agreement with city officials. According to Karen Lewis, who leads the CTU, the new agreement would increase the salaries of new educators and allow nearly 21,000 teachers affiliated with Chicago Public Schools to get pension contributions. “It wasn’t easy. But what we ended up for is good for kids, is good for clinicians, is good for para-professionals, for teachers, for the community,” said Lewis. “It’s not a perfect agreement. But it was good.” The CTU represents 28,000 educators. Chicago has one of the nation’s largest school systems. “Chicago Public Schools’ finances will be stronger and on firmer ground because of this agreement,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a statement. “Parents and taxpayers will be relieved and more importantly, reassured that we all came together to work together for a common purpose, and students across Chicago will be in school this morning and path to a brighter future.” Read more.
