The D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has started issuing identification documents with gender-neutral X markers.

“Washington D.C. has long been a leader in LGBTQ rights and gender issues, and this change is the most recent example of our city’s commitment to inclusivity,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Officials said D.C. is the first jurisdiction in the country to add the gender neutral marker.

The new gender designation process was developed with the help of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE).

“This new X gender marker is really important for people like me because it means that we are going to get licenses that are more accurate to who we are,” said NCTE Media Relations Manager Jay Wu.

Identifying as neither male nor female, Wu will be one of the first to apply for the new license.

The gender neutral X marker is also available for cisgender people who don’t want to disclose their gender to the DMV.
