Hall for the past 19 years has served on the Detroit police force and according to Essence magazine is taking over at a time where they need it the most.

A year ago Dallas Police Chief David Brown retired after five officers were killed after a peaceful protest was ambushed.

Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax praised Hall and said, “Chief Hall is a proven leader with a stellar background and a passion for public service.”

Hall’s father was in the field of law enforcement, but was killing in 1971 while on duty.

She said, “My father not being there meant the same thing as every other child in Detroit or around the world growing up without a father. It has an impact.”

Hall is scheduled to start her new job in the fall.
