SHOOTOUT AT LAS VEGAS FED BUILDING LEAVES COURT OFFICER, GUNMAN DEAD
A gunman began firing in the lobby of a Las Vegas federal building yesterday, killing a court officer and wounding a deputy marshal before being fatally shot himself. The suspect, identified as 66-year-old Johnny Lee Wicks, was apparently upset over losing a lawsuit over his Social Security benefits. Shooting erupted just after 8 a.m. at the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building and lasted several minutes. The U.S. Marshals Service said a 48-year-old deputy marshal was wounded and hospitalized, and Stanley Cooper, the 65-year-old security officer, died. Wicks died across the street shortly after a shootout.
