Officials at The Ohio State University notified students, faculty and fans of their plans to drain the historic Mirror Lake more than a week prior to the Buckeyes rivalry game against Michigan.

According to the statement: “The safety of our campus community is always our top priority. Out of an abundance of caution with the university’s focus on safety at top of mind, we are sharing that Mirror Lake has been temporarily drained. The lake will be refilled at a later date.”

Students were also reminded that entering the lake or empty basin is destructive, hazardous and is considered criminal trespassing as University Police will monitor the area days leading up to the game Nov 24.

The Undergraduate Student Government’s decision to end the jump came after an Ohio State student died from jumping into the lake on Nov. 25, 2015. Austin Singletary was found underwater just after midnight after participating in the jump. He later died at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center from a broken neck.

Prior to the tragic death, it was a nearly 50 year long tradition for students to jump into the lake around midnight on the Tuesday night prior to the annual football game between the Buckeyes and Wolverines.
