Lil Nas X carried on the torch from people like Young Thug and created the country trap song of the year, “Old Town Road.”
The viral hit, which gained a big chunk of its audience from the popular app TikTok, became so massive that it reached the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, the cross-genre Hot 100 chart AND the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Song chart. However, in a shady move, Billboard removed the track from the Hot Country Songs chart, ultimately because it wasn’t “country enough.” Their actions sparked major outrage and debates about what counts as country music and what doesn’t, especially when race comes into play.
Ultimately, Lil Nas X struck back with a vengeance when he recruited Billy Ray Cyrus (yes Miley Cyrus’ dad)for the remix of “Old Town Road.”
The song dropped on Friday and the Internet was never the same…
