Ohio State quarterback Matthew Baldwin intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal according to several reports.

Baldwin, a redshirt freshman who spent last season rehabbing a knee injury, was expected to compete with transfer Justin Fields for the starting job this fall after the departure of Dwayne Haskins.

Baldwin released a statement on Twitter on the decision:

Fields appeared to have a leg up in the competition but head coach Ryan Day suggested their competition for the starting job would extend well into fall training camp.

Fields and Chris Chugunov are the only scholarship quarterbacks currently on the OSU roster. The Buckeyes will likely seek a senior transfer quarterback this offseason to boost their depth.

Baldwin went to Lake Travis High School near Austin, TX and led his team to the state championship game in his senior season. He played with receiver Garrett Wilson at Lake Travis, and Wilson is now an early-enrolling freshman at OSU.
