2. U.S. PLANS SWIFT AID TO HAITI
President Obama vowed yesterday morning to provide swift aid to Haiti following the massive earthquake that is believed to have killed thousands. He called the situation “truly heart wrenching” and offered “deep condolences and unwavering support of the American people.” Obama said the U.S. is now working to deliver food, water and medicine to Haiti, and that search and rescue teams from three states are headed there. He also said the U.S. is working to account for U.S. embassy personnel and their families in Port-au-Prince, as well as other Americans in Haiti. The president encouraged Americans to donate to relief efforts. After Obama’s speech, U.S. officials confirmed yesterday that ships, helicopters, transport planes and a 2,000-member Marine unit are either on the way or likely to begin moving soon. Gen. Douglas Fraser, head of U.S. Southern Command, said other U.S. military forces are also on alert, including a brigade of about 3,500 troops. Dozens of countries including Britain, France, Canada, Germany, China, Mexico and Venezuela pledged rescue teams, doctors, money and supplies.
