In a day where small private owned record stores are almost obsolete, there stands strong one record store with a world wide appeal. We recognize Roots Records for Black Music Month.

Roots Records is a small record shop but has a big history here in Columbus, OH. Mostly known for their extensive selection of Reggae and Dancehall music, Roots is also known for it’s Hip Hop, Trip Hop, Jungle, Ragga, Dub, Soul, Funk, and Jazz collections as well.

Located on 1357 North High St. near OSU’s campus, the legendary Roots Records maintains everything that we have come to love about the ‘record shop’. The owner Carl (aka Zero) opened Roots Records over 15 years ago and it still remains a “cultural highlight” of the Columbus Downtown area. Vintage appeal, walls plastered with event posters of the hottest Reggae and Hip Hop Events that have come to the capital city, vinyl still in stock, unique box collections, and a great selection of vintage tees hanging from the walls. Located in the back of the small store is an even smaller studio set up where some of the local dancehall DJ’s often spin classic reggae and today’s dancehall hits.

The staff is very knowledgeable of music as a whole and are in no way your typical cash register clerk, these are music lovers. Not only does Roots Records boast one of the most unique music stores in Central Ohio, they are also very involved with the music scene outside of just record sales. Roots Records hosts and promotes some of the biggest concerts to come to Columbus. Names like Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Movado, Culture, Sizzla, Rakim, Baaba Maal, Sister Nancy, Elephant Man, and Capleton make their way through Columbus yearly, making Columbus an attraction for Reggae fans statewide.

To keep the reggae scene alive Roots Records also has one of the most popular sound systems in the nation under their belt. Roots High Power consists of DJ’s P Fonk, Blade, Willie G, Cody, and Mikey Million. This sound system plays more than just the major reggae events in Columbus, they tour the country and also take the main stage at some of Jamaica’s biggest music festivals.

Roots Records is single handedly keeping the record store and world music alive in Columbus.
