Honoring Our Dreams

“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
Martin Luther King Jr

For many high school students Martin Luther King (MLK) is a historic figure from the 1960s known for a famous speech and a tragic death. But to the more than a thousand Magic Johnson Bridgescape students in Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland, the ideals he lived and died for are real to them every day.

Some of our Ohio students wrote blogs about how MLKs words from five decades ago relate to their lives in 2014. Their assignment: what would they like to say to the estimated 31 hate organizations in Ohio.

Here is an excerpt from one of the essays:

The Man Who Changed America:
Why We Celebrate MLK & His Greatest Achievements
By: Shianne Jeffers

Magic Johnson Bridgescape – Road to Success Academy

“…Today we remember and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for starting a series of chain events leading to a world where his dream is a reality; one where people are no longer separated by color- this is what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted. He never gave up and accomplished something for the better. He inspires so many others to do the same, and he’s a hero in the eyes of all Americans. The world isn’t perfect, and racism does still exist. This is why we continue to remember MLK and exercise his ways in an effort to continue making our world a better place. Now, we are equal in America, the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” Martin Luther King Jr. truly is the man who changed America.”

At the six Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies in Ohio, many students come to us believing that nothing they can do will make a difference. We are here to tell them that their dreams ARE within reach, and that we will help them get there.
