Tuesday President Obama proposed putting a two-year freeze on pay for all civilian federal employees.   Obama stated  it’s a move that will save $2 billion in the 2011 fiscal year and more than $60 billion over the next decade.

He said this is part of the sacrifice needed to get the federal budget under control.  “some broad sacrifice, and that sacrifice must be shared by employees of the federal government.”

The President stressed that his proposal is not meant to punish federal workers. Those affected include all civilian federal employees – including national parks workers, Department of Defense employees and doctors who care for wounded veterans. Congress must vote to put such a freeze into effect.
