COLUMBUS, Ohio – An 8-year-old girl is starting her own service project to help the homeless.

Alexis Chan organized a donation drive for the YWCA Family Center after being crowned “Preteen Cover Girl” and named State Ambassador at this year’s Ohio National American Miss Junior Pageant, which scores participants on their communication skills and involvement in their communities.

She has taken part in community service since she was little, but after the pageant, she said she wanted to create a project on her own.

The YWCA provides shelter for the homeless and helps keep families together. Alexis felt a connection to the organization after seeing the children at the center.

“I want to be part of the community and make it successful,” she said. “It has to do with the families and it’s fun to help people, too.”

The center is most in need of hygiene and infant care products as well as clothing and home furnishings.

The drive runs until Aug. 25, and Alexis hopes to accomplish her goals by then: to have one truckload of goods and 25 full baskets from businesses and to raise $500 to provide one dinner to the center.

Alexis will be collecting items on Aug. 4 and 18 at Old Sawmill Park on Sutter Parkway in Dublin from 12-2 p.m., and on Aug. 8 and 14 at 1952 Diamondback Drive in Powell from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
