The story: all too familiar. The aftermath: taking it to the streets.
Late Friday evening, protests erupted in Madison, Wisconsin after an unarmed black teen was shot and killed by police earlier, according to numerous reports.
The teen has been identified by family as Anthony “Tony” Robinson a 19-year-old recent high school graduate. Police allegedly shot him after forcing their way into an apartment where they were responding to a “disturbance,” according to local paper, The Daily Cardinal. After the alleged altercation, Robinson was shot and later died at a hospital. There is no indication that Robinson was armed.
Madison Police Chief Mike Koval did not identify the officer involved in the shooting—with demonstrators pointedly calling for this information—but did say that the cop was hit in the head, treated at the hospital and released, according The Cardinal. Koval also said that the officer performed CPR on Robinson.
The Wisconsin State Journal says that Robinson is the third individual shot by police since April of last year.
Predictably, protests exploded in Madison on late Friday night into early Saturday morning. Marchers said Robinson was shot five times, a claim police did not confirm.

Protesters began filling the streets near the scene after the incident, claiming the shooting was unjustified. The demonstrators were quick to invoke the “Black Lives Matter” movement, which started after the police-involved deaths of two unarmed black men last year: Eric Garner in Staten Island and Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo.
Robinson’s grandmother, Sharon Irwin, allegedly shouted out: “You’re not protecting us, you’re killing us!” according to a social media poster and journalist on the scene. Irwin is also reported to have said, “I don’t want violence out here.”

State law mandates that an independent investigation be conducted by the State Department of Justice.
