Black Woman With Money

One feminist group wants to give American money a little makeover by putting a woman on the $20 bill.

Representation matters–and that includes on money! With the exception of the Sacagawea coin there is no currency in circulation that features a woman’s likeness. The game of dollars and cents has been dominated by men, and some think it’s tie for that to change.

Women On 20s is campaigning to get a historical female figure on to paper one by 2020. That will be just in time for the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. ABC News reports that as part of its push, the group had visitors to its Website vote on which woman they want to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

The final four have been whittled down from a list of 15 very deserving ladies. Although each of the original crop of candidates was very deserving in their own way, the finalists are activist Rosa Parks, abolitionist Harriet Tubman, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Cherokee Nation Leader Wilma Mankiller.

“In the past 48 hours since the final round started, we’ve had 60,000 people cast votes already,” Women on 20s’ executive director Susan Ades Stone told ABC News. “Though all these women and many more deserve to be honored, the winner will be a symbol of what we hope are greater things to come.”

Once a winner is chosen, her name will be used in a proposal to President Barack Obama, requesting that he at least start a plan of action to get a female face on the $20 bill.

A deadline has yet to be to determined for this round of voting, so you might still have time to cast your ballot here!
