You don’t see this everyday. After breaking up a fight between two groups of teenagers on a D.C. street, a female cop joined a local girl in an epic dance-off to keep the peace.

Aaliyah Taylor, a 17-year-old senior at Ballou High School, approached the police officer as she was dispersing the crowd on K Street SW and played “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” on her phone and starting dancing the Nae Nae.

After the officer joked with Taylor by saying that she had better dance moves, the two led a dance battle on the street that was caught on video by another witness to the fight.

“Instead of us fighting, she tried to turn it around and make it something fun,” Taylor said in an interview with the Washington Post. “I never expected cops to be that cool. There are some good cops.”

The officer in the dance battle, a cop who has been in the force for approximately three years and just came back from a tour of duty in Iraq, declined to have her identity released to the public. She insists that the story isn’t about her.

“It’s kind of embarrassing that this became so big,” she said. “This is what we do everyday.”

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier wrote in a statement that “the viral video today of the First District Officer positively engaging with teens and diffusing the conflict yesterday in a manner that appropriately resolved the call is reflective of the many positive police-community interactions that take place daily in Washington, D.C.”

Taylor spoke at length about how her positive experience in interacting with the officer brightened her outlook on law enforcement. Her siblings previously had unsavory experiences with police officers that were rude or excessively rough during arrests.

“I thought all cops were cruel because that’s how I saw them,” Taylor said. “I’ve now seen there are good cops out there.”
