Earlier today, infamous hacktivist group Anonymous began its release of private data on politicians that are allegedly affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The group’s stunt is now being recognized as a lead up to its annual Million Mask March taking place this Thursday around the world; the full list of 1000 politicians the group is claiming to be part of the KKK is planned to be publicized at the time of the event.

Anonymous first made threats to dox US politicians that are suspected of belonging to the KKK last week. The group made good on its promise by releasing 57 phone numbers and 23 email addresses as well as a three-minute video that featured a partial list of names, ages, spousal information, photos, government job titles and home addresses of politicians including Senator Tom Tillis of North Carolina, Senator John Cornyn of Texas and Senator, John Horne Iverson of Georgia.

Another Twitter user that is infamous for hacking KKK websites named “Amped Attacks” also released a document on Pastebin alleging various US senators and mayors of being involved with the KKK and other hate groups. Amped Attacks is not affiliated with Anonymous. He claims that he spent nine days verifying the private information of politicians he is accusing of KKK membership, linking them with the group by using the emails he found signed up with affiliated websites.

Out of concern for spreading wrong information, Anonymous made another statement on Twitter that has since been deleted that seemed to distance itself from Amped Attacks saying, “we will not promote an unverifiable list of politicians.”

The hacktivist group did not list a specific source for the information it presented in the video, but it has said that it gleaned information from various Twitter accounts that were broken into. Anonymous first began focusing its efforts on KKK last year for the Ferguson, MO protests.

The Huffington Posts says mayors as well as a spokesperson for one of the accused senators have strongly dismissed the claims, reducing them to “baseless internet garbage.”
