Ever since his election, GOP Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin has been at the center of controversy for his political views. Bevin was very vocal about his opposition towards the Affordable Care Act. Now that he’s been elected, he has made a decision that will affect the lives of nearly 140,000 convicted felons. Gov. Bevin will prevent the restoration of voting rights for individuals who were convicted of non-violent crimes in the state of Kentucky by issuing an executive order. “While I have been a vocal supporter of the restoration of rights,” Bevin said in a statement. “It is an issue that must be addressed through the legislature and by the will of the people.” The decision comes as a surprise to many, because while campaigning, Gov. Bevin wanted to give non-violent felons both their voting and gun rights back. “I do believe in second chances, and I don’t think it’s fair or appropriate that we would take from somebody something that could be restored to them, that the nation would be better to have them in possession of all their rights,” he said back in September. Gov. Bevin has been in office for less than a year and is already flip-flopping on issues. Read more.
Report Shows Nearly Three People Die Daily at the Hands of Cops
A new report released by The Washington Post revealed that in 2015, almost three people lost their lives at the hands of cops every day; 965 people were shot and killed by police over the course of this year. According to the report, only 90 of the individuals who were shot were unarmed. Although the study shows that only 4 percent of the police shootings involved Black men who were unarmed, 40 percent of the shooting victims were Black males; illustrating a serious racial disparity. And 60 percent of the people who were shot and killed by officers after showing ‘less threatening behavior’ were either Black or Hispanic. The Guardian maintains a calendar that tracks all police related deaths. As of this weekend, the number has risen to 1,125. Read more.
