Bernie Sanders heads to Oklahoma City Saturday ahead of presidential primary

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is doing everything in his power to garner the Black vote. Sanders is slated to make an appearance on The Tom Joyner Morning Show on Monday. During the show, he will take questions from a roundtable of Black hosts and contributors, which will include Roland Martin, Don Lemon, Al Sharpton, Jacque Reid, and Sybil Wilkes. The interview will air at 8:50 am ET on the show’s radio station.


MSNBC Officially Cuts Ties With Melissa Harris-Perry

Following a fall-out with MSNBC, Melissa Harris-Perry’s show has been officially cut from the network’s lineup. On Friday, Harris-Perry said she was boycotting her own show because she was constantly battling with producers over having control in regards to what topics should be discussed. She claims the network planned on suspending her show and was just keeping her on air for diversity purposes. “I will not be used as a tool for their purposes,” Perry wrote in an email to her staff. “I am not a token, mammy, or little brown bobble head… I love our show. I want it back.” The issue between Harris-Perry and MSNBC reportedly escalated when she planned on addressing the controversy surrounding Beyoncé’s song “Formation.” When she started the segment, the network broke into coverage of the presidential election. Harris-Perry took to Twitter on Sunday to say farewell to her viewers. “Farewell #Nerdland,” she tweeted. “Inviting diverse new voices to table was a privilege. Black Transgender Actress Mya Taylor Wins Big at the Independent Spirit Awards

Actress Mya Taylor hit a major milestone for the LGBT community on Saturday. Taylor, who starred in the movie Tangerine, was the recipient of the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female Actress. During her powerful speech, Taylor said it’s time for Hollywood to start recognizing transgendered actors and actresses. “There is transgender talent,” she said. “There’s very beautiful transgender talent. So, you better get it out there and put it in your next movie.” The film is centered around two transgender sex workers who venture out to Los Angeles to find their pimp. The movie was shot with iPhones and made its premiere at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. The Independent Spirit Awards shines a light on films made with a budget of less than $20 million. Former NYC Mayor David Dinkins Hospitalized for Pneumonia

Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins has been hospitalized for pneumonia. According to Dinkins’ spokeswoman, Lynda Hamilton, he is currently in the intensive care unit at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Hamilton shared that he is “definitely sounding better with each day” and is getting “needed rest.” Dinkins, who is now 88-years-old, served as the mayor of New York City between 1990 and 1993. He was the first Black person to hold that position in the nation’s biggest city. Read more.
