Wanda Sykes spoke out in support of Mo’Nique’s Netflix boycott.
Netflix came under some fire when Mo’Nique went public about an offer to do a comedy special on their platform. Though most would appreciate an offer to work with a company of Netflix’s caliber, the comedian was happy to let the opportunity go when she claimed they decided to low-ball her pay.
She boldly called out the streaming company for both gender and color bias. Using past offers they gave to Amy Schumer and Dave Chappelle as examples, Mo’Nique proposed her point to boycott Netflix for the unfair treatment.
Some were not as supportive of and even questioned the ‘Queens of Comedy’ vet’s venture to equality. However, one person who came to her aid was fellow comedian Wanda Sykes.
Sykes tweeted her pride for Mo’Nique of coming forward to tell her truth. She also admitted that Netflix once shot an “offensive” offer of half of the $500,000 they offered Mo. Luckily, she later “found a new home” for her What Happened…Ms. Sykes? special.
Gender bias in Hollywood doesn’t stop there. The Hollywood Reporter published a story addressing Tracee Ellis Ross possibly getting a “significantly less” compensation compared to her Blackish co-star Anthony Anderson. Though those exact words didn’t come from Ross, she cleared up speculation in a statement on Twitter saying:
“I was in a renegotiation like many actors find themselves in during the fourth season of a successful show. I wanted to be compensated in a way that matches my contribution to a show that I love for many reasons, including the opportunity it allows me to reshape what it is to be a fully realized black woman on TV.”
