The former kingpin inspired many gangsters and rappers is gone.
The ex-kingpin and the inspiration before the Oscar-winning film American Gangster has passed away. Denzel Washington played Frank Lucas in the movie that later inspired Jay-Z to create the self-titled album.
Lucas’ brother broke the news Friday that he died on his way to the hospital in New Jersey. At this moment his illness is unknown. He is survived by seven children.
Ruling the drug trade back in the late 1960s to early 1970s, he was known for cutting out the middle man and using the military to buy and sell heroin. In 1975, Lucas was arrested and charged with federal and state drug charges. For exchanged for lesser time and to put his family in witness protection, he testified that led to 100 drug-related convictions. many of them being New York City Police officers.
