“I heard there’s money on the block and my nerves been shot/so I can’t stand still like Michael J Fox…” – Sugar Tongue Slim

You would think a co-sign from Jay-Z would be enough for an up-coming rapper, but even Hov’s handshake isn’t always enough to seal the deal.

Atlanta’s Sugar Tongue Slim (STS) made his way around the spoken word circuit before connecting with Def Poetry Jam’s Black Ice and forming a group with his partner Cornbread.

Around 2004 he traveled down to Miami for a performance and ended up in a car accident that shattered his pelvis. A one day trip turned into a month in the hospital, but that didn’t stop him from taking a meeting with Hova as soon he got back home.

“I had a brace around my waist that went down around my leg,” he remembers. “I couldn’t even stand up straight. But I came from Philly off a couple of Percocets and walked into that meeting.”

By the time he limped out of the office he had a contract with Def Jam but before he stepped off the SEPTA in  Philly things had changed. (Watch the clip to find out what happened.)

Now he is back on his hustle touring as part of Black Thought’s clique The Money Making Jam Boys and promoting his second mixtape “Demand More 2.”

“It’s the best project we’ve put out to date,” he says. “The first one was just me rapping, but this one has more original songs.”

Things have come full circle as a stand-out track on the mixtape is the Don Cannon produced “F*ck A Hook.” With its chant of “Marcy To Madison Square” legend has it that it was made originally for Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 but was not used. Other production heavyweights like Sean C & LV also give this east/south hybrid top shelf beats to flow over. Not bad for kid who used to paint houses at Emory.

“We need the fans to demand more. We’re not going to dumb it down for you,” he says of his dedication to lyricism.”Up the ante MCs!”

If you are in the NYC area Sugar Tongue Slim will be performing at S.O.B.S tonight with B.O.B!
