Via Dispatch

Columbus police shot a man on a Downtown street shortly before 1 p.m. today after responding to a call about multiple stabbings inside a building.

Jim Gilbert, president of the local police union, is at the scene and said officers were called to 150 E. Gay St. on a report that more than one person had been stabbed inside the office building.

When police arrived, they saw a man with two knives outside the building. When he came toward them, officers shot him, Gilbert said.

Jeff Hutchinson, 49, of Parma, said he was walking near the Renaissance Hotel at 3rd and Gay streets when he heard seven to nine gunshots.

Hutchinson said he walked east on Gay and saw a bloody man in handcuffs face down on the pavement surrounded by police.

Hutchinson said three people were placed in ambulances and taken from the scene. At least one of the people had visible injuries. Hutchinson is a Communications Workers of America union official attending a workers compensation conference in Columbus.
