In 1988, Public Enemy’s “Night Of The Living Baseheads” was one of the most vocal indictments of crack cocaine use ever heard on record. The haunting video was the real life version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” with zombie-like “baseheads” dragging themselves about.
What many fans at the time didn’t know was that Public Enemy member Flavor Flav was a user of the deadly freebase drug. In fact, Flavor Flav told TheUrbandaily in an interview in 2011 that he thought the song was actually written about him.
“It was kind of difficult doing the video to that song because I felt that Chuck was talking about me,” he revealed. “…I took it personally because of a guilty conscience. Because I was doing it…at the time that we wrote the record.”
