CLEVELAND –Michelle Knight brought a vibrant symbol of hope to Seymour Avenue Wednesday, just a short time before a home that harbored a dark past will be destroyed.
She carried a large bunch of yellow balloons and handed them out to neighbors to unite the community and thank people for their support.
Knight, who was one of the three women who were held captive in Ariel Castro’s home for about a decade, is now an advocate for other missing children.
She reminded the public about all of the children who remain missing to this day.
By tearing down Castro’s home, it’s one less reminder of the pain and abuse that went on for so long.
Removing it will also clear a spot for a positive asset in the community, such as a garden.
How the land will be used will be determined by the survivors and neighbors in time.
Castro’s family members were allowed to take approved personal items from the home on Monday. Workers emptied the house of furniture and other belongings Tuesday.
The demolition was expected to take one day. Seymour Avenue will be blocked off throughout the work.
Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus escaped the home in May when Berry got the attention of neighbors who helped to break down a door.
Castro admitted to raping and torturing the women since he abducted them separately from a west side neighborhood in 2002, 2003 and 2004 respectively.
He was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 1,000 years.
