Jason Collins has turned to Sports Illustrated to make another huge announcement: He’s hanging up his jersey.
After 13 years in the NBA (and becoming the first openly gay player in the league), Jason has decided that it’s time for him to leave the game.
“To put it short: I’m officially announcing my retirement from the NBA,” said Jason, who was actually watching a game of college basketball while speaking with Sports Illustrated today. “I think it’s time for me to truly become just a fan and watch from the sidelines now.”
The pro baller, who had been playing for the Brooklyn Nets most recently, said that he’s having a hard time keeping up these days. For him, the physical indication was all he needed to resign. “My body was talking to me. My body was telling me that it’s time,” Jason explained.

Bowing out while playing for the Brooklyn Nets kind of brings his career full-circle, since he started out playing for them when the team was still in New Jersey. As a retiree Jason will have plenty of free time on his hands, but he’s already got a plan for how to use it wisely.
“I’ll still be in the world of basketball,” Jason said. “I have a new role with the NBA as far as being a NBA Cares Ambassador. [I’ll be] going around and participating in different community outreach programs. I’ll be supporting current and former NBA players.”
His new gig will also include “encouraging kids and families to keep a healthy and active lifestyle.”
