2015 Black Girls Rock! - Arrivals

After video of a Black teenage girl being physically removed from her classroom seat and slammed to the ground by a White school resource officer went viral, many people are expressing their outrage – including celebrities. Songstress Jill Scott, who is known for speaking out on social issues, shared her discontent with the footage with HelloBeautiful.com. “She could have said the most horrific things out of the devil’s belly and for someone who is in an authority, and a man, to slam that child like she was a rag doll is too much,” said Scott. “It seems like it was OK there, because none of the students reacted, the teacher didn’t react, it seems like this is something that occurs there.” She also shared that she believes it’s essential for parents to be more involved at their children’s school. “We have to check them out. We have to side-eye everybody. I have definitely showed up to my son’s school with grills on. Be uncomfortable. You don’t know me and you need to be wary of this parent because if something like that were to occur with my child, we’re going to have a whole bunch of problems,” she said. Read more.

The View co-host Raven-Symone’s controversial comments have landed her in hot water yet again. She sparked a lot of outrage after expressing her thoughts on the Spring Valley High School incident. While many people believe that the student was the victim in the situation, Raven thinks both the student and the officer are at fault. “The girl was told multiple times to get off the phone,” she said on The View. “There’s no right or reason for him to be doing this type of harm, that’s ridiculous. But at the same time, you gotta follow the rules in school. First of all, why are there cell phones in school? This shouldn’t even be a problem to begin with, and he shouldn’t have been acting like that on top of it.” Her comments unleashed a lot of negative feedback and criticism on social media. Read more.
