Via BBC:
A rare case of the Zika virus being transmitted through sex, not a mosquito bite, has been reported in the US.
A patient infected in Dallas, Texas, is likely to have been infected by sexual contact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) told the BBC.
The person had not travelled to infected areas but their partner had returned from Venezuela.
Zika is carried by mosquitoes and has been linked to thousands of babies being born with underdeveloped brains.
It is spreading through the Americas and the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the disease linked to the virus a global public health emergency. [Read on – HERE]

Dallas Reports First Sexually Transmitted Case Of Zika Virus In The US -blogged by @avah_taylor – On Tuesday (Feb. 2), Texas health officials reported the first sexually transmitted case of the Zika virus in the United States, one day after the World Health Organization declared that the #Zika outbreak is a "public health emergency of international concern. " Dallas County health officials said the patient contracted Zika from a sexual partner who had returned from a trip to Venezuela, where there's a Zika outbreak. "We've confirmed that someone who didn't travel has had Zika in the U.S.," CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden told NBC News. "And all of the information provided to us by Dallas makes it clear that it is likely sexual transmission. " Although it can be transmitted through sex, Zika is usually spread by mosquitos. Four out of five people who have the virus show no symptoms and experts say a vaccine is years away. More than 30 cases of Zika have been reported in the US, but they've mostly been identified as being travel-related, meaning they pose a relatively low risk of being transmitted, according to USA Today. Last week, WHO said it expects 3 to 4 million people could become infected with Zika in the Americas and that the virus has been reported in 23 countries and territories in the region.
