Justice Department Combats Issues Surrounding Poverty and the Justice System

On Monday, the Justice Department filed a brief in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia related to state guidelines that restrict those who don’t pay court fines from using their driver’s license. The motion stemmed from a class-action case that involved four individuals who had their driver’s licenses suspended due to the fact that they were unable to pay fees issued by courts in Virginia. The Justice Department claims that restricting someone from using their driver’s license is unethical because the Constitution prevents reprimanding people due to their financial circumstances. “People depend on driver’s licenses to get to work, access health care and provide for their families – and so when their license is suspended for reasons that do not relate to public safety, it unnecessarily disrupts lives and harms communities,” Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Civil Rights Division, said in a statement. “This brief advances the department’s robust efforts to prevent unlawful practices that punish poverty at every stage of the justice system and that trap vulnerable residents in cycles of debt from court fines and fees.” The Justice Department has taken several measures to address issues related to poverty and the justice system. Voter Intimidation is a Major Concern at the Polls

As voters head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots, state officials are gearing up for the chaos that comes with the process. Voter intimidation and long waits are some of the major concerns at the polls. There have been many people who have taken legal action against Donald Trump supporters, claiming they have been intimidating people at polling sites. “The state laws vary so much that you have to prepare for it. And the states where it’s close, that’s where the temptation will be greatest for voter intimidation tactics,” said ACLU’s voting rights director Dale Ho. “It’s like those fire tools behind the glass: ‘Break in case of emergency.’” Long lines have also been an issue at the polling sites. In Cincinnati, the line at a polling site reportedly spanned for a quarter-mile on Sunday. Read more.
